Stephanie Jory was born in London in 1978. She has a performing arts background having trained at Mountview Theatre School. Stephanie describes her work as finding ones self in a place that is disarming and uncomfortable, yet strangely alluring through its mystery and surreality; a feeling of willingly surrendering to a scary place.
By relying on the quality of oil colour for the reality of human form, and contrasting this with a flat, unreal acrylic background Stephanie’s work presents to the viewer’s most primitive desires and curiosity.
Stephanie considers we are naked (mentally and physically), free yet submerged, at one with these foreign yet familiar surroundings or elements, and moreover, unaware of what to do – if anything. Paralysed; frozen in time and space, but simultaneously free to travel into, or simply allow ourselves to be encompassed by, our excitement, peace and fear.
Stephanie's paintings form an integral part of many significant international collections.
