David Gainford was born in South Africa in 1941 and came to England at the age of four.  He showed an early talent for drawing and won several National competitions and at fourteen won a scholarship to art school, where his formal studies in life drawing and painting were conducted by John Pisani, a Royal Academician.
 
From John Pisani, David acquired a thorough understanding of the painting methods of the old masters. Following a period of several years developing and refining these techniques he employs that expertise today.
 
David was fortunate to be able to observe Robert Lenkiewicz at work over a lengthy period of time in his studio in Plymouth. This close professional relationship has greatly influenced his working methods.

David currently divides his time between studios in both the UK and in the south of France.

Having recently secured a publishing contract with Buckingham Fine Art a select number of images are now available in signed limited edition print.

His paintings form an integral part of many significant international collections.
