Alexandr Onishenko

Alexandr Onishenko was born in Chernigov, Ukraine in 1957. His formal training came from his studies during the 1970's at the Institute of Art in Kiev. Alexandr has lived and worked in Prague, Czech Republic since 1991.

Alexandr Onishenko first treats his canvases with a special pitch-black medium, the ingredients of which remain secret. His unique technique of painting on black canvas with both brushes and a palette knife are essential aspects of his working practices. Starting with his base colour of black, enables Alexandr Onishenko to explore extremes of light and dark. Through the contrast which black canvas provides, colours are given greater intensity, vibrancy and shadows are livened with new depths. Alexandr's base medium and thick applications of rich oil paints on canvas are his expressions of New Impressionism.

The subjects of Alexandr Onishenko's paintings include pristine landscapes, Prague's narrow streets and close-knit patchwork city rooftops and intimate portrayals of the female nude.

Alexandr Onishenko's work is presented at Galerie Jakubská in Prague, the United States, widely across Europe and exclusively in London at Graham Fine Art.
